if you want to have fun writing ( especially pop or electronic stuff ) and want a completely different experience-i'd go with ableton. if you do work to picture and post stuff ( or orchestral composing )-DPs probably your best choice. and seriously, as someone who has written professionally since the days of atari and mastertracks pro, i haven't had this much fun ( yes, fun! ) or felt this inspired in many many years.ableton is that cool.īottom line, they're both great.

DP's midi editing is far deeper but fortunately, i've got good musical chops so my editing needs are pretty simple anyway.Īnd the session window in ableton using clips is way cool if you have a controller or two. so i bounced the audio with effect at 130 and the the new audio with printed effect followed the tempo to 140 perfectly.
i got the coolest effect at 130BPM but it didn't have the same pitched effect at 140. ableton doesn't have the pitch correction that DP does but ableton's ability to warp audio to almost any tempo is fantastic.įor example, today i was running some vocals into a pitch shifting delay.

it takes some getting used to ( instruments on the right side of the screen, single edit windows and such ) but i've found it to be a most creative piece of software. for songwriting and remixing ableton is mind-boggling good. i still do my scoring, sound design and post work in DP.i don't feel ableton's really leaning in that direction.
